If you are without a working laptop power cable and looking to replace it, there are a few things to keep in mind. Failure to do so can cost you time, money, and could even damage your computer. Fortunately, shopping for a suitable replacement power cable for your laptop is a simple process. Here is what you should know:
Laptop Model Number
You will need your laptop’s model number to find an appropriate product. This can usually be seen on the bottom of your computer. You can also read your computer’s user manual or look under system properties if your laptop has the energy for it.
System Power Requirements
It is essential to have a charger that meets your system’s power requirements. The two things you need to know are your computer’s voltage and amperage. Like the model number, this information can usually be found on a sticker on the bottom of your computer.
Replacement Charger Options
Now that you have your laptop’s model number and power requirements, it is time to shop for compatible laptop chargers. There are two reliable options when considering a replacement charger for your laptop.
Replace it with the Original Charger
I strongly recommend using the same model of charger as your computer came with. Conduct a web search for your computer’s brand and model number with the added keyword “charger.” Once you think you found it, make sure the information is the same as for your computer model. For example, it is essential that the charger’s connector will work with your laptop. If it all checks out, then you are good to go!
Choose a Quality Generic Charger
If you cannot find the original charger model, then look for a generic charger that works for your laptop. By this, I do not mean shop for a charger made for another brand or model of laptop. If you do this, you are paying extra for a product that may not work with your laptop and may have other compatibility issues. I also do not recommend buying a cheap laptop charger. Cheap often entails cheaply made, at least with computer chargers. When I say generic, I am talking about a charger that is not made for a specific laptop. You should make sure it will fit in your computer and meet the power requirements.
Replacing your laptop’s power cable need not be stressful. All it takes is some information about your device and an understanding of the available options. After that, choosing a replacement is a simple process. For more information about laptop maintenance and repair, check out our other articles.
